Balatonman, Hungary

Time of year: June

Value for money: 5

Location: 5

Crowd support: 2

Organisation: 4

PB potential: 2

Course: 2-lap lake swim, challenging 4-lap bike course and flat 12-lap run course

Competitors: cca. 100 (in the Iron distance event)

Locality: The race is held in Balatonfured, on lake Balaton. The town is beautiful and there are lots of things to see and do in the surrounding area.

Getting there: It is easily reached by car, train or bus. If you’re travelling from abroad I’d say you should fly to Budapest and then it is only about 2 hours from there.

My experience

We arrived in Balatonfured on Wednesday and were very pleased with our cottage by the lake at ‚Camping Fured‘. The town was really nice and there were lots of things for the children to do on the campsite.

On Friday I collected my race number and went to the race meeting. There were three meals included in the race fee but I didn’t go to try them, although I wanted to!

On race day I rode the short distance to the depo and queued up to rack my bike. The race started at 8am and we swam 2 laps of the swimming course (the half distance swam one).

The bike course was one of the prettiest I have ridden, with vineyards and beautiful views along the way, but it was also quite challenging, with an almost constant climb for the first 9km, and we had to ride that hill 4 times! I was surprised to hear the compere say I had finished the bike in third position!

The run course was a 12 lap run and there I managed to take 2nd position at around 20km and hold it until the end, finishing in 10:12 (1:01/5:44/3:21)
